Chicks explore their new environment.
Here at the farm we are working on minimizing energy requirements in many areas. One historically energy intensive area has been the brooding of chicks. Before our pasture raised chicken or turkey can go out on pasture they must be kept in a brooder with temperatures between 85 F and 98 F for three weeks. This year we decided to take advantage of passive solar energy to help minimize the fossil fuel energy requirements.
On a 60 degree sunny day, as we often see in the early spring, there is no need for added heat in the greenhouse brooder.

Jessica's mother, Becky, enjoys the warmth of the greenhouse on a chilly spring day.
These chicks are on organic grains now and will be on pasture starting at three weeks of age. Because we believe allowing our animals access to the outdoors and the good green grass makes the best product you can find, we wait until the grass and weather will make this possible before we start raising them. Now that they are here, they will be available in just 8 weeks. Your early orders are greatly appreciated!
