Perfect…… It is a word with a different meaning to everyone. My mother-in-law has always had the view of a perfect apple as large and nicely waxed for the shiny “perfect” appearance where as I look at that same apple with a look of concern as I recognize what went into making it “perfect”. On the other hand, I look at a basket of organically raised produce as “perfect” even when the blemishes are obvious. I know I may be in the minority in America, but this week I took the chance that our CSA members could appreciate the “perfection” of good food even with an obvious blemish. Sweet corn is one of my favorites, yet chemical fertility and pesticides are a routine part of growing it. The usual pest is seen as a single worm that inhabits just the end of the ear. The only way to control it organically is inserting a natural pesticide into the silk of each ear which is very tedious. Sometimes we can grow it without a pest problem but often times it is just part of organically raised corn. I usually withhold produce from the boxes that is not blemish free but this week I took a chance to include the sweet corn even though I know it will mean you have to break off the tip and discard the worm. If it will bother you, just discard the corn before looking. If you can come closer to my view of perfect, enjoy the corn after breaking off the tip.
It is the end of the summer season crops and the beginning of cool season crops. Lettuce is back!
Next week we will discuss……….
